Just for Florida drivers

As a Florida driver, you’re used to driving in the rain. But did you know that wet pavement contributes to nearly 1.2 million traffic crashes each year? Stay safe on the road with these tips.

The #1 goal should be to see others and to be seen. Replace your windshield wiper inserts when they do not clear your windshield in a single swipe. Double check your headlights, taillights, brake lights and turn signals. This will help others see you but also you see them.

Check your tire tread depth and make sure they are properly inflated. This is imperative since it helps you maintain good traction on those wet roads. Don’t forget to check your spare tire as well. Quick tip – insert a quarter upside down into the tire groove, if you can see Washington’s head, it’s time for new tires.

Slow down and give drivers space

Maybe one of the most obvious points, but slowing down when it’s raining can reduce a car’s chance of hydroplaning. Hydroplaning can happen when as little as 1/12 inch of water is on the road. Increasing the space and decreasing your speed allows you to react to others without hitting your brakes hard or having to turn sharply.

If you do skid, do not panic and follow these basic steps:

  • Keep your eyes on the road and continue to look forward and steer in the direction in which you want the vehicle to go.
  • Avoid slamming on the brakes as this can make it even harder to control.

Avoid cruise control

While this is a great feature in dry conditions, you should avoid it when it is raining. To prevent the loss of traction, you may need to reduce your speed by lifting off the gas, but that cannot be accomplished when cruise control is engaged.

Limit distractions

Turn down the radio, get off the phone and focus on the road. Even if you are a safe driver, there are others on the road who are not paying as much attention. It is important that you are aware of your surroundings so you can react properly.
